Yewlands Academy have used iConnect to increase their capacity to deliver more effective professional learning opportunities for staff. It’s helped them to free up time and transformed their culture of learning and development.
“The main challenge we face is capacity,” describes Lucie Wainwright, Assistant Headteacher. “The answer, when we ask staff what they need, is time. We don’t have a magic wand for that so we have to find ways in which we can make sure teachers have really good quality continuous professional development.
We also want to make sure staff feel supported and have their needs met, so they can help learners to achieve the best and have fun, exciting and brilliant lessons that actually make them love school.”
The use of iConnect has had a transformative impact on the professional learning culture at Yewlands.
Nearly 60 lessons a week are being recorded and watched now across Yewlands, which, Lucie says, would be “absolutely impossible to do with just people. iConnect has built our capacity and provided staff with the safety of owning their own videos, which is key.
Teachers are excited to share either full lessons or parts of lessons that they’re particularly happy with, meaning they are more collaborative than they have ever been.”
Engagement with professional learning
One of the schools mentors, Gaynor Wolstenholme, explained the impact iConnect has had on engagement of staff with their development: “We’ve set trios up in each department. The people in the trios meet twice every half term; they set themselves a focus, use iConnect for the next two to three weeks to look at that focus and then share their recordings. They then reflect on each other’s and move on to the next focus when they feel ready,” Gaynor.
More collaborative professional learning
“Teachers are excited to share either full lessons or parts of lessons that they’re particularly happy with, meaning they are more collaborative than they have ever been”, explained Lucie.
Development of a bank of great practice
Yewlands have started to create a shared bank of videos that will act as a growing resource that staff can dip into for training, inspiration and development. “People are contributing to a valuable bank of resources, demonstrating all the amazing stuff that’s going on in our school.”
